Steve Pelluer throws for 6 touchdowns in Cowboys' opening day rout of Pittsburgh

Hearts were heavy in Three Rivers Stadium as the Steelers remembered the passing of their Hall of Fame owner Art Rooney, who passed away just 2 weeks ago at the age of 87.  In memorium, the Steelers will wear a patch bearing his initials all season

This was an afternoon to forget for the Steelers though from the opening gun.  They were thoroughly dominated by the Tom Landry-led Dallas Cowboys, falling down to an impossible 28-0 lead in the 1st quarter, and allowing 42 points before halftime.  Dallas scored touchdowns on 6 of its first 7 possessions, broken up by a Steve Pelluer interception returned 74 yards for a touchdown by Dwayne Woodruff.  This coming just 2:12 after a 69 yard touchdown from Bubby Brister (11-24 (1 td) 89.8 rtg)  to Louis Lipps which seemed to bring life to the Steelers and the home fans, cutting the lead in half to 28-14 early in the 2nd quarter.  The Cowboys went to work to extinguish the Steelers' flame by virtue of Steve Pelluer connecting with Kelvin Martin and Herschel Walker for the 2nd time each.  Harry Newsome, the punter for Pittsburgh had 2 punts blocked in the 1st half, providing the hot hand of Steve Pelluer a short field.

Michael Irvin, Dallas' #11 overall pick in the 1988 draft caught his 1st career reception and 1st TD reception with 8:49 left in the game.

Herschel Walker rushed the ball 32 times for 196 yards. Dallas consistently beat Pittsburgh on third down, converting on 7 of 11 opportunities. They controlled the action both on the ground and in the air. They out-ran Pittsburgh 223 to 67 yards, and out-passed them 274 to 205 yards. Dallas had the advantage in time of possession, having the ball for 34:53. Dallas got out to an early lead outscoring Pittsburgh 28 to 0 in the first quarter. They were on top at the half 42 to 17. A bright spot for Pittsburgh was a touchdown pass to Louis Lipps that went for 69 yards with 13:58 left in the 2nd quarter. But in the end that fine effort was wasted..
