Bengals break team rushing record, gain 608 total yards in rout of the Cardinals

The Riverfront Stadium played host to the first ever game played by the Phoenix Cardinals, who relocated from St. Louis during the offseason.  Hopes are very high in Cincinnati as Boomer Esiason, James Brooks, and new draft choice Ickey Woods plan on having a big impact on the AFC playoff picture in 1988.  Head Coach Sam Wyche is on the hot seat after failing to make the playoffs in 1987 with a 4-12 record.

The Cardinals came out with a puncher's chance.  The first play of scrimmage was a 49 yard bomb from Neil Lomax (17-29 242 yds, 2 TDs 108.7 rtg) to Roy Green to quickly move the ball into Bengal territory.  The drive would quickly stall and Al Del Greco missed his 50 yard field goal try.
From that point forward, Cincinnati and their relentless running attack took complete control of the afternoon.  Their first drive was 6 plays for 67 yards, with 51 on the ground, with the exclamation point of a 5 yard tun by James Brooks (17-155 2TD).  The Bengals scored touchdowns on 3 of their next 4 drives, all passes from Boomer Esiason (19-28 216 yds, 4TDs, 1 Int 115.5 rtg) who had the luxury of Phoenix's inability to stop the run.  Tim McGee caught 2 of those touchdown passes and also added one early in the 3rd quarter for 3 total.
Meanwhile, Phoenix struggled.  Their last 5 possessions of the 1st half resulted in 2 fumbles, a touchdown, and 2 punts.  The Bengals held a comfortable 28-7 halftime lead.

Tim McGee after catching a touchdown pass from Boomer Esiason that would put the Bengals on top 14-0.  McGee had a career day, catching 6 balld for 56 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Bengals spent the second half bleeding the clock, but also effectively moving the ball.  They easily won the ball possession "battle" 37 minutes to 23 minutes.  They scored quickly (Tim McGee) in the 3rd quarter to take an insurmountable 35-7 lead.  Besides Brooks' 155 yards, Rookie Icky Woods had 126 yards on 13 carries and Stanley Wilson had 72 yards on 15 carries.  In all, the Bengals had 379 rushing yards on 52 carries, a 7.3 yard average.  They crushed their team rushing record of 300 yards rushing from 1986 against New England, they set a team record for 1st downs (36), tied a team record for 7 offensive touchdowns, and their 608 yards of offense was the 2nd most in franchise history to a 621 yard performance against the Jets, also in 1986.  The final score was a merciful 49-14.
