New Orleans 0, Atlanta 19

Atlanta Fulton County Stadium played host to the Week 2 Divisional Match-Up between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints.  The Saints came off of a game where they came up short after giving the 49ers all the can handle, and trying to avoid a dubious 0-2 start.  Atlanta came into their home opener having already beat a weak Detroit Lions team.

The game started out without much offense as the team exchanged punts on the 1st 2 drives that came up short at about mid field.  On their 2nd possession, New Orleans' Quarterback Bobby Hebert (.13-29, 125 Yards, 2 Interceptions, 28.7 Rating) got sloppy and Charles Dimry intercepted his pass, giving the Falcons a drive start in Saints' territory.  John Settle caught a pass from Chris Miller (14-25, 104 Yards, 66.1 Rating) and gained 27 yards to set up a 33 yard field goal by Kicker Greg Davis.  The Falcons were up 3-0 and it was all the scoring they would need.
New Orleans was able to move the ball offensively.  On the next drive, behind some gutsy running by Rueben Mayes (12-77), they were able to get inside the Atlanta 40 and were stopped thanks to 1st overall pick Aundray Bruce's 1st career sack,  The Saints decided to Punt on 4th down and pin Atlanta.  Punter Brian Hanson executed the coffin corner kick to the 7, and the Saints defense held.  On their next drive, the Saints moved the ball again to the Atlanta 7 thanks to a few catches by John Tice (2-20)and a 14 yard reception by Eric Martin (5-42).  Morton Anderson missed a chip shot 23 yard field goal that would have tied the game, and control swung firmly to the home team.

The Falcons drove 80 yards for a touchdown on the next possession thanks to 37 total yards from bowling ball Gerald Riggs, a huge 3rd down and long pass from Chris Miller to Michael Haynes, and scoring on a 7 yard run by RB John Settle to take a 10-0 lead with 1:45 to play in the half.  The Saints were able to get the ball down to the 34, but went unsuccessfully for a touchdown instead of trying for a long field goal as time ran out.

The 3rd quarter was a defensive struggle.  The Falcons managed 3 first downs and they held the Saints to 0 first downs.  Punter Rick Donnelly pinned the Saints at their own 7 yard line early in the 3rd quarter, providing the Falcons with much needed field position that resulted in Greg Davis' 2nd field goal of the game to make the score 13-0.
The Saints gave their last fight early in the 4th quarter, moving the ball for the 1st time in the half.  Dalton Hilliard had a 20 yard rush and Eric Martin caught a 17 yard pass.  They were eventually faced with a 4th and 6 from the 33 and went for it.  Hebert's attempted pass to Lorenzo Hill fell short and they gave it up on downs.
Gerald Riggs had 48 rushing yards on the next drive to run off nearly half of the quarter.  The drive also resulted in Davis' 3rd field goal of the game to make it a 3-score-game 16-0 with under 7:00 to play.  Davis added another field goal late to cap the scoring at 19-0.

This was Atlanta's 1st shutout since December 12th 1982, a 35-0 win against New Orleans, and New Orleans' first time on the losing end of a shutout since November 13, 1983 at San Francisco.  Atlanta travels to San Francisco next week, while New Orleans tries to collect itself at Detroit.
