Seattle 34, Denver 24

The 2-time defending AFC Champion hosted the Division rival Seattle Seahawks in the season opener.  1 Year ago, Brian Bosworth bragged he would rather hit John Elway late than allow him out of bounds, which led to 10,000 sales of "Ban The Boz" t-shirts, which were Bosworth were ironically purchased from his company... with the proceeds going to Childrens' Hospitals.  There is still no love lost between these 2 teams who figure to compete for the 1988 AFC West Title this season.

Brian Bosworth created a ruckas leading up to the Broncos in the past, but not much in the game itself, recording 3 tackles and this questionable late hit that was not flagged.

The season couldn't have had a better start for the visiting Seahawks led by QB Roger Krieg (19-27, 231 Yards, 3 TDs, 133.4 rating).  On the opening drive, Krieg went 5 for 5 for 76 yards and a touchdown, capped by a 40 yard touchdown pass to Steve Largent (4-71 1TD) on the 6th play from scrimmage.
John Elway (25-47, 244 Yards 1 TD, 2 Ints 57.4 Rating) led the Broncos' answer, completing 2 passes to Vance Johnson (10-89) and 1 pass to Mark Jackson (8-99 1 TD), and assisted by a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty.  The drive resulted in a 37 yard field goal by kicker Rich Karlis.
The Seahawks again drove down the field effeciently, needing only 8 plays including a 30 yard reception by Brian Blades which set up a 2 yard run by Curt Warner to take a 14-3 lead, still with over 5:00 remaining in the first frame.

Steve Largent started the season for Seattle in a big way, opening the scoring with a 40 yard TD reception just 2:47 in

Early in the 2nd quarter, John Elway suffered his first major miscue.  He fumbled a snap at his own 20, giving the potent Seahawks offens a short field which was promptly taken advantage of with Krieg's 2nd TD pass connecting with Paul Skanski.
Later in the quarter another Elway miscue, an interception to CB Patrick Hunter (which was returned 30 yards) again gave the Seahawks the ball with a short field, this time at the Bronco 28 with just under 5 minutes remaining in the half.  A 3rd down Ruben Jones sack at the 6 yard line held the Seahawks to a 30 yard field goal by Norm Johnson, but the damage was done before halftime 24-3 Seattle.

The Broncos came out in the second half and grinded out a 10 play touchdown drive.  Tony Dorsett (13-72 1 TD) scored on a 7 yard run to make the score 24-10.  Seattle, though would dampen the home crowd's spirits. executing an impressive answer:  A 12 play, 90 yard drive (lost 10 via penalty).  Curt Warner and John L Williams proved to be a formidable 1-2 punch, while Dave Krieg would make the Broncos pay with the passing game if they started to crowd the line.  John Spagnola caught Krieg's 3rd TD pass of the game to take complete control of the game with a 31-10 lead late in the 3rd.

Denver's offense couldnt mount an attack until it was too late, down 34-10 in the 4th quarter.  John Elway slung the ball around and Mark Jackson caught a 21 yard touchdown pass.  Denver recovered the onside kick and again scored via a 1 yard Elway TD run.  The Broncos could not recover a 2nd onside kick.  They got the ball back for a last gasp with 1:37 left, but Elway threw his 2nd interception, this time to CB Terry Taylor ending a forgettable day for Elway and the Broncos 34-24.
